Why are my headlights giving less light?

Good lighting is essential for safe driving. Yet, many motorists only notice late that their headlights provide less light than they used to. Especially during dark winter months, exciting evenings, or drives on unfamiliar roads, poor lighting can lead to dangerous situations.

At Auto Elektra Veghel, we regularly receive vehicles where the driver complains about poor visibility in the dark. Often, it turns out there is more going on than just a broken light bulb.

Low light output is more common than you think.

Many drivers unknowingly expect the reduced light output of their headlights. Because the process is gradual, the difference is often only noticed when someone is driving another car or when a light fails completely.

Poor lighting can cause:

  • Reduced visibility of the road.
  • Later marks of pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Fatigue during night drives.
  • Reduced visibility in fog and rain.
  • Reduced road safety.

Weathered windows

A common cause is dull or weathered headlight lenses.

Due to UV radiation, weather influences, and stone chips, the plastic of the headlights can become cloudy over time. As a result, a large portion of the light is blocked before reaching the road.

Many people think that the bulbs need to be replaced, whereas professional headlight restoration often already results in a huge improvement.

Worn-out lamps

Halogen lamps also lose brightness over time.

Although they are not yet lit, they often produce significantly less light than when they were new. Therefore, we often advise replacing bulbs in sets.

This is how you get color differences and uneven light output.

Problems with LED and Xenon lighting

Modern vehicles are increasingly using LED or Xenon lighting.

These systems last longer than traditional lamps, but can develop failed faults. Consider, for example:

  • Defective LED modules.
  • Problems with ballasts.
  • Damaged cabling.
  • Save in the lighting control.
  • Error messages in the dashboard.

Specialized diagnostic equipment is often required for these systems.

Poor headlight adjustment

Even when the lighting is technically sound, incorrect adjustment can cause problems.

Headlights adjusted too low indicate insufficient road surface. Headlights adjusted too high can blind oncoming traffic and lead to failure during the MOT.

Correct adjustment ensures maximum visibility without obstructing other road users.

Diagnose to avoid unnecessary costs

We regularly see vehicles where direct parts are replaced while the problem lay elsewhere.

At Auto Elektra Veghel, we first check the entire lighting system. This allows us to quickly determine whether the problem is caused by the bulbs, wiring, electronics, or the headlight units themselves.

Problems with lighting? We are happy to help.

Do you feel that your headlights are giving off less light, are you getting an error message on the dashboard, or is an LED or Xenon system no longer working properly?

At Auto Elektra Veghel, we have the knowledge and equipment to quickly detect and eliminate faults in modern lighting systems. Feel free to contact us for advice or a diagnosis.
